Christine, directed by Antonio Campos, stars Rebecca Hall as the TV journalist in a straightforward dramatisation of the story, and it shows the escalating frustrations that may have led her to end her life. Over the decades Chubbuck’s suicide was forgotten, but, remarkably, two different films exploring her life just had their premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The video footage of her death was sealed away by the station’s management and has not been seen since. Chubbuck herself was rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead about 14 hours later. Her audience had been small but many called the police to report the incident. All while the cameras rolled.Ĭhubbuck was a broadcaster for a local news station in Sarasota, Florida, and when she committed suicide on-air on 15 July 1974, a minor panic occurred in the community. She then pulled out a revolver from a bag of puppets she kept under her desk, pointed the gun at the back of her head and pulled the trigger. The video, posted to both Twitter and Facebook, was quickly removed by the companies, but not before it had been viewed thousands of times. About five hours after the shooting, Flanagan was driving a car he rented earlier in the month and using a license plate reader, a state trooper stopped him.
Police quickly identified Vester Lee Flanagan, 41, in connection with the shooting and apprehended him around noon. She underwent surgery and is in stable condition. Vicki Gardner, who was being interviewed by Parker, was shot and injured in the incident. Alison Parker, 24 years old and a morning reporter for WDBJ7, and Adam Ward, 27, a member of the crew, were killed.
